magnetic flowers

Spice up your drab tablecloths by embellishing them with a bunch of magnet-fitted flowers. Unlike sewn-on accents, the blooms can be changed for each season.

The possibilities are endless!

You can apply the same idea to curtains or a lamp shade!

Secure the flowers to any soft surface, including curtains and tablecloths, by placing a second magnet on its reverse side.

This tablecloth would be a lovely addition to any bridal shower!

too beautiful not to share

lions & tigers & bears oh my!

That is what E & I saw on our trip to the Cincinnati Zoo last week! Seeing the animals was great, but even better was the quality time we were able to spend together!

Our first stop on the trip was lunch at Skyline Chili...yum..then we were off t
o the zoo.

Here are a few of the things we saw:

This guy was picking up hay with his trunk & eating it. The little girl next to me kept yelling "stop sweeping the floor you stupid elephant!"
Mud baths anyone? This insect looks exactly like a leaf! I bet you thought it was a leaf - didn't you? All I could think is how amazingly creative God is!

Up close & personal

Maybe this is where the phrase cat nap came from
We were able to see these guys during their feeding. They would stand up and clap before the trainers would throw their fruit in!
Not as sweet as the coke commercials makes them out to be. He does look like he's smiling here though!

My favorite animal of the day
THE GIRAFFE

I bought these peacock feathers from the gift shop

I did not steal them from this bird - although he is missing a few!

Fun times...

the office - not the hit comedy

In liu of creating an office space in E & I's home, I thought I should post these suggestions. I cannot credit my own creativity, however, Better Homes & Gardens deserves the honor on this one.

In our office, I have painted the desk and chair, hung the chandelier (a brass one I spray painted of course), & hung the windows. I ordered some glass knobs (are you surprised?) for the desk, however, they are not the right size so I need t putty & re-drill. I'm not sure if I am going to take that on while E is gone, or wait for his service when he returns from the sunny land of Hilton Head.

I am also working on the window treatments. I am planning on making my own window treatments. This will be a first...I will let you know how it goes. I hope to get a few fabric swatches soon & I will post and beg for your suggestions. If you have any experience making window treatments please feel free to comment any advice. I need all the advice I can get!

I am thinking the window treatments will be similar to these

I hope to hang the drapes above the window, like this picture. I am hoping it makes the ceiling seem taller. I am also going to put some small frames in between the two windows. Now I just have to decide on fabric - that's the difficult part!

Here are some ideas I may implement into my current remodel
I hope they inspire you

Organize the little things

Monopolize your space: dedicate an entire wall to storage & brainstorming

Use every inch of spaceGet creative: shop local home improvement or thrift store for a hollow-core door. Paint it to match your decor, then mount it on painted table legs.

Wanted: Twin Size Bed

Hello All! Happy Monday! I am going to take the opportunity to use my blog for my own personal gain this afternoon.

I am curious to find out if anyone has a twin size mattress and box spring they are looking to get rid of. Or do you know anyone who does? If you have either of these items sitting around, cluttering up your house, please let me take them off of your hands!

Feel free to comment or email me at Rachel.Ridd@gmail.com Thanks everyone!

snapshots from the cucina

It is officially Sunday night, which means the weekend is coming to a close. E & I had an event filled weekend. I took off on Friday and we went on a mini adventure to the Cincinnati Zoo. I hope to post some pictures tomorrow. We also had to opportunity to spend the night at his parents in Ohio & visit with his Grandma who is 92 (I think?). On our way home we stopped at IKEA! I picked up this bed frame that I have had my eye on for some time.. I also found a simple white quilt for the spare bedroom I am in the process of revamping. When we arrived back in Lexington, we got suited up for the Mid Summer Night's Run. This is E & I's second year running the race and we both beat our previous times! I started running last summer and have truly grown to love it. (notice the word "grown" ... there is hope for you) The Mid Summer Night's Run last year was my first race & I have ran in four other races since then. I hope to post some running tips soon. Today, E left to go on a golf trip with his dad. I hope to get lots of crafty projects done during his time away! While catching up on some R&R this afternoon I snapped a couple pictures from our kitchen. I hope you enjoy the details. The kitchen is a room I hope to renovate next year, once I save up some cash. Thanks to the blog Urban Grace Interiors, my creative juices are flowing. My inspiration can be found here.

Ok, enough rambling, here are some close ups from our cucina...

A spider plant grown from a split off of one in my office

Ansel Adams photos framed from an old calendar

Every kitchen needs some dog treats

Fun salt & pepper (I don't feel like I should call the shakers, but I don't know what else to call them) from my good friend Lu

A table runner I found at the Pottery Barn outlet

I display cook books, magazines, and recipes on this plate holder I bought at the dollar store

Last but not least
My favorite thing in the kitchen:

STELLA!

I will leave you with the classic head tilt
Happy Weekend!

valuable

v is for valuable

It's pretty late & after a long day of work my brain isn't functioning quite right, so I should probably step away from the blog. However, I have something that I am compelled to share. I feel like God has put this burden on my heart tonight.

I was sitting in a graduation ceremony this evening at a substance abuse facility and heard a graduating client with tears in her eyes say that no other female had ever told her she was valuable until she was in her thirties.
During her time at the Chrysalis House, a staff member simply said to her
"I'm not going to let you fall through the cracks...you are too valuable."

She stood up in front of a room full of people and humbly proclaimed that the words of this fellow female changed her life.

The book of Matthew says
"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"

I feel like Christ is saying here "don't you know how valuable you are?"

All throughout the scriptures we are called heirs, children, and co-laborers'.

If we believe these things are true, why are we so hesitant to tell others how valuable they truly are? Do we believe that we are of real value?

To be honest, this is one of my greatest struggles. I have spent unmentionable hours, days, months, and even years not believing I was valuable. I have believed the lie that I am only valuable if I weigh a certain amount.

This is my struggle, but each of us have our own roadblock when it comes to believing who we really are. No one is exempt.

In a sermon I commonly listen to titled mugged by the mirror, the pastor says

most people spend a lifetime trying to become what they already are.

Unfortunately, I believe that this quote is true for so many of us. Today I encourage you to know who are you. Know what God says about you. Rediscover the truth that you are a child of God. He created you. I encourage you to refuse to believe anything else.

No women should go half of her life without being told she was valuable. There is something wrong with this.

If you are a women and believer of God, I encourage you to choose to believe what God says about you. You must first know who you are before you can validate anyone else.

Tonight I was encouraged I stand strong in my knowledge of who I am. Standing strong is not a passive thing. You must be very active. The world is screaming that our worth as women is directly proportionate to how we look.
I know this is true when I hear the statistic that this year $20 billion is spent on cosmetics alone. $74 billion will be spent on diet food. In addition, 7.4 million Americans will undergo plastic surgery this year (5 out of 6 of those will be women). I will continue just to scream the point (I am very passionate about this)... the average women is 5'2" and weighs 152 pounds, while the average model is 5'9" and weighs 110 pounds. There is something terribly wrong with this.

Ladies- know who you are! It is only when our hearts take hold of the marvelous truths of God, that we will have the strength to tell others. You must first believe it about yourself.

Maybe then it won't take 30 years before a woman is told she is valuable.
